History

In a tale of passion, determination, and creative vision, the Fenimore Chamber Orchestra (FCO) emerges as a beacon of hope and cultural vibrancy in the heart of Central New York State. Founded in the midst of the worldwide Covid pandemic, the FCO has defied all odds to become a year–round ensemble that resonates with audiences, captivating both the local community and international visitors.

The seeds of this musical adventure were sown during a conversation held in February 2021. Rosemary Summers, Maciej Zoltowski, and Thomas Wolf – accomplished professionals in the music industry – reflected on the artistic and cultural landscape of the Cooperstown region. While the area boasted prestigious colleges, museums, a seasonal opera company, and a symphony orchestra, there was an apparent void – the absence of a dedicated chamber orchestra.

Undeterred by the challenges posed by the pandemic and the prevailing doubts of naysayers, the trio’s determination to enrich the region’s musical tapestry remained unwavering. Thus, the Fenimore Chamber Orchestra was born – a testament to the resilience and creativity of these visionary founders.

Incorporation

A pivotal moment arrived when the three trailblazers sought out like-minded individuals to form the Founding Governing Board of Directors. Mr. Wolf took on the role of chief fundraiser, tirelessly seeking funding to underwrite the inaugural season. Their concerted efforts bore fruit, and in June 2021, Fenimore Chamber Orchestra was officially incorporated in the State of New York. By February 2022, the FCO received its coveted 501(c)(3) determination from the federal government, cementing its status as a nonprofit organization committed to serving the community.

Debut

The FCO’s journey reached a crescendo with the eagerly awaited Debut Concert on August 27, 2022, held at the historic Christ Church in Cooperstown, New York. A hand-picked ensemble of distinguished musicians, renowned internationally for their artistry, came together to form the heart and soul of the orchestra. The musical programming of the 2022–2023 season showcased a diverse repertoire, spanning from timeless classics by Gluck, Haydn, and Mozart to the enthralling romantic and modern works of Gounod, Tchaikovsky, D’Indy, Milhaud, Wirén, and Skalkottas.

The response to the Fenimore Chamber Orchestra has been nothing short of phenomenal, with both audiences and critics alike showering it with effusive praise and overwhelming enthusiasm. The founders and the Governing Board are humbled and thrilled by the tremendous reception, which has surpassed even their loftiest expectations. This outpouring of support has cemented the FCO’s status as a vital and thriving addition to the artistic and cultural life of the region.

As Fenimore Chamber Orchestra looks ahead to the future, it promises to continue captivating hearts, inspiring minds, and enriching the cultural fabric of Central New York. With each performance, the FCO leaves an indelible mark, proving that even in the face of adversity, the power of music and unwavering dedication can create a symphony of hope and joy.
